Workplace Injury Prevention Training

Why is employee injury prevention education so important?

There are two key factors needed to help prevent workplace injuries.

The first is safe working processes and systems. This one is quite self-explanatory, as safe working processes will reduce the likelihood of an abnormal, excessive or unsafe physical stress from occurring whilst performing workplace tasks.

However, even with the best and safest work practices in place, workplace injuries still occur. Why is this? There are three reasons for this. Firstly, it's because we are all human, and even with safe work practices in place, humans make mistakes. Secondly, it's because we are all different, with different strengths and weaknesses. What might be sufficient to prevent a workplace injury in one person may not be sufficient to prevent a workplace injury in another person. And thirdly, it's because safe work practices are simply not enough to prevent workplace injuries from developing. Physical stresses are always developing in the body, both at work and away from work, and sometimes the body breaks down, and unfortunately safe work practices alone cannot stop that from occurring.

This is why the second workplace injury prevention factor is so important, and this is quite simply, employee injury prevention education.

As a Workplace Physiotherapist with 12 years experience assessing and treating thousands of injuries, I am confident in saying that the best way to prevent a workplace injury is to understand how injuries actually develop, and recognise the physical symptoms or warning signs that indicate an injury is just around the corner. This knowledge allows you to take preventative action as soon as you feel even a slight symptom developing in your body.

And, employee injury prevention education provides this knowledge to your employees!

What is covered?

  • Understanding the difference between niggle, discomfort, pain, and fully fledged injury, and how symptoms typically progress through this spectrum.

  • Lifestyle and environmental factors that increase the likelihood of an injury occurring.

  • What is happening in the body as injuries develop.

  • Warning signs to be aware of that suggest an injury may be about to occur.

  • What do to to prevent symptoms from progressing once they begin to develop.

Session duration?

I recommend allowing 1 hour for an employee injury prevention session. The core content requires 30-40 minutes, so allowing a bit extra will give your employees a chance to ask any questions that arise during the session.
